Isomalt Agate Cake Topper with Dried Flowers and Isomalt Letters
Oh! How I have dreamt of this cake often. Perfect little dried flowers’ resting in isomalt. I have watched so many artists create amazing things with dried flowers and resin. I knew this is something I wanted to do in isomalt for a long time.

So when I finally made the leap and ordered my molds and dried flowers, I was beyond excited! Now before ordering dried flowers, I did have a run at drying them myself. It didn’t turn out as successfully as I would have liked. LOL. Have you ever tried to dry fresh flowers before? I used silica gel that is commonly found in electronics and other items to keep moisture out. I found it was impossible for me to get all the silica gel off the flowers creating a mess! So I finally gave up and ordered some from a little shop on Etsy www.etsy.com/shop/driedflowerstory. They are gorgeous, bright, and came quickly and perfectly packaged. I will definitely be ordering again. Although I do plan to try my hand at some different drying techniques in the future.

I found these amazing molds at www.counterculturediy.com. They shipped quickly and are excellent quality. Once I had my molds and flowers it was time to get busy!

The very first one I made turned out exactly as I had envisioned. I was in love! When I made the letters with little dried flowers in them I just could not get over the cuteness. I am so excited to use these on more designs.

Working With Isomalt
When working with isomalt it is important to remember it gets over 300 degrees! It is very hot! You can burn yourself very easily. unlike regular burns, with isomalt, you will have a hot sugar substance stuck to your skin. Please wear gloves and use caution.
I always use Simi Cakes Isomalt for my projects. It is so much easier than cooking down your own isomalt. And safer. I order mine from www.IcingImages.com. They are quick to ship and have great customer service as well.
How To Begin
When I begin I pour my isomalt bits into a silicone cup and heat in 30-second intervals until it is melted. Be very careful removing it from the microwave. It will be bubbling. Let the bubbles settle down for a moment. This will help limit air bubbles. Once it’s ready, slowly pour enough to cover the bottom of your mold. While it is still wet begin placing your dried flowers with tweezers. If your isomalt is starting to set back up, microwave it for 15-30 seconds. Then it is time to pour your second coat.
If you are leaving them flat, leave them in the mold until completely cool. But if you want to create a little bend in them, at about 140 degrees, or when it is set up but still warm, you can start banding it to the shape you need.
After it is cool, take a blow torch and run it over the piece to create the shiny gloss and remove air bubbles.
I used a paintbrush to paint a gold accent around the edge using Poppy Paints.
And that was it! They were done. Putting them together on the cake was the final moment where your art just comes together. It was beautiful. I used just a little isomalt on the back of the agates to adhere them to the cake.
Please let me know if you try this and tag me in your pics! I would love to see it!
Until next time, happy creating!
Jennifer
